Introduction to Medical Spanish (WHN194-62)

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9/28/21-10/28/21, 10 sessions
Format: This class is offered in a hybrid format. The first session on 9/28 and the last session on 10/28 will take place in person at the Hyannis Center. The remaining sessions will be instructor led live streaming Zoom sessions.
This is an introductory class which will focus on the following topics: Spanish medical terminology, pronunciation issues with medical terminology, English to Spanish pronunciation issues, basic communication with Spanish-speaking patients and families, awareness of cultural differences between Spanish-speaking countries and American medical settings, broad guidelines when interacting with patients and families from a culture different than one’s own, and commonly used words or phrases that may be helpful in a variety of medical settings.

This is an ideal program for anyone working in the medical profession who is interested in learning to deliver more culturally appropriate patient-centered care.
About the Instructor
Caryl Delaney has been teaching off-and-on at 4C’s for several decades, working in various capacities: Literacy Program Coordinator, as well as professor of Spanish and English. Her career has branched off into many different directions, from Computer Aided ESL/Bilingual Education to college administration. She holds an M.A in Bilingual (Spanish)/ESL Studies from the University of Massachusetts and a certificate in medical interpreting from LLC Language Connections of Boston.
She has worked as a medical interpreter and a professor both in the United States and Mexico. Now, she looks forward to working with The Center for Corporate and Professional Education (CCAPE) at Cape Cod Community College.
