Become a Professional Tutor Online Program (WPG529-62)

Format: ONLINE. This is an online program with a :30 minute Zoom orientation on 10/13 at 10am or 3pm, and a wrap up session on 11/17. Zoom guidance and instructions will be provided in advance of the first session. 

Course Description:

Whether you are starting your own tutoring business or working to support students in a home or classroom environment, effective tutoring practices are essential to student success. This course will provide training to tutor individuals and small groups of all ages in a virtual or face-face environment. Learn techniques and strategies to encourage independent learning and inspire success for your tutees.

Participants will learn strategies to encourage student skills including time management, independence, growth mindset, and study skills. 

Participants will also learn practical skills for tutoring:

  • Communications techniques
  • Starting and ending the tutoring session
  • Working with the tutoring cycle
  • Goal setting
  • Incorporating technology tools
  • Active listening/questioning methods
  • Handling difficult sitations

This course is completely online with an instructor led live Zoom launch and wrap-up session. Students should expect to spend eight hours per week completing readings, activities, and assignments that reinforce tutor training techniques, theory, and best practices in the tutoring field over a five-week period.

Who Should Attend?

This course is geared for anyone looking to help students with their academic goals. Strategies to encourage student confidence and independence are ideal for caregivers helping children with their homework, homeschoolers, educators, or people looking to start their own tutoring business. 

About the Instructor:

Rachael Bancroft has worked at the college since 2001, teaching courses in the Language and Literature Department at both the developmental and college level. She also served as the Coordinator of Learning Resources from 2012-2016, where she developed a peer and professional tutor training program and procured International Tutor Training Program Certification through the College Reading and Learning Association.

She currently teaches English courses full time in a face to face and online environment. Bancroft's Master's of Education in Reading and Language, teaching and tutoring experience, and Quality Matters training have provided her with a strong background in curriculum development as well as an understanding of the skills necessary for quality professional tutor training programs.
